Have your details ready
You’ll get the most accurate quotes with your current policy’s declarations page, the driver’s license for everyone in your household who drives, and each car’s registration or VIN. Include every household driver: leaving one off can lead to a higher price or a canceled policy later.
Match the coverage, line by line
Ask every company to quote the same:
- Liability limits, such as 100/300/100. This is the coverage that protects your savings if you cause a crash. See how much car insurance you need.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist limits.
- Medical payments or personal injury protection (PIP), which no-fault states require.
- Collision and comprehensive deductibles. A $1,000 deductible quote will look cheaper than a $500 one.
- Extras such as rental reimbursement, roadside assistance and gap coverage.
If quotes don’t match, ask for a revised one with the same limits before you compare prices.
Compare the real price
- Policy term. Many companies quote six months, others twelve. Double a six-month price before comparing.
- Payment plan. Monthly plans often add installment fees; paying in full is usually cheaper.
- Discounts. Check that each quote includes the ones you qualify for, such as multi-car, bundling, paperless or good student.
A quote isn’t final until you buy
Before issuing a policy, insurers check your driving record and claims history (from reports such as your motor vehicle record and C.L.U.E.), and in most states a credit-based insurance score. If anything you entered doesn’t match, the price can change, so be accurate up front.
Look past the price
A few dollars a month matters less than how a company treats you after a crash. Look up complaint records through your state insurance department or the NAIC’s Consumer Insurance Search, check the company’s financial strength rating, and ask friends about their claims experience.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my car insurance quotes so different?
Each company weighs factors like your record, car, ZIP code and credit differently, and quotes may not have matching coverage. Line up the limits and deductibles first.
Is the cheapest car insurance quote the best?
Not always. Make sure it has the same coverage as the others, then check the company’s complaint record and claims reputation.
Will my quote change after I buy?
It can. Insurers verify your driving record, claims history and, in most states, credit before issuing the policy. Accurate answers keep the price stable.
